The 1988 GMC Sierra was very much similar to previous generation Chevrolet C/Ks and slightly redesigned for 1988. It was offered in 3 series as 3500 (1-ton), 1500 (1/2 ton), and 2500 (3/4 ton).
1988 GMC Sierra Sportside and Wideside
1988 GMC Sierra came in either two-wheel drive or a standard Insta-Trac four-wheel drive. Models with back fenders were labeled as Sportside, while those without back fenders were labeled as Wideside.
Variations in Bed Size
The shortbed models were designed with a 6.5-feet bed and wheelbase of 117.5 inches, while the long bed had 8-feet bed and wheelbase of 131.5 inches. The extended-cab version came as both 8-feet bed and wheelbase with 5 inches, or 6.5-feet bed and wheelbase with 141.5 inches.
Six passengers were able to sit comfortably in 1988 GMC Sierra extended-cab versions and had additional standard bucket or bench seats. Extended-cabs had also a folding bench, while other cabs obtained a two buckets or a bench seat.
1988 GMC Sierra Performance
A standard base engine of 4.3-liter V6 was used on the1988 GMC Sierra, which evolved decent power level of 160hp. Optional engines deployed in the 1998 Sierra were 5.7- and 5.0- liter gasoline V8s and the 6.2 liters diesel engine. Every model had the choice of manual or automatic shift transmission, with antilock rear-brakes.
